Morocco Expresses Determination to Continue Boosting Ties with Ecuador

Rabat — Morocco has expressed determination to support Ecuador President Daniel Noboa and his efforts to ensure the development and stability of his country.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita conveyed this determination in a statement to the press on Saturday, during Noboa’s inauguration.

The Ecuadorian president also received Bourita during the Moroccan minister’s visit.

In his statement to the press, Bourita also conveyed King Mohammed VI’s congratulations to the new president, noting that Morocco is present during the event to express the monarch’s “clear desire to support the president in his efforts to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in the economic, commercial, and security sectors.”

The Moroccan official also commended the “historic moment in relations” between Morocco and Ecuador, adding that his trip represents the first visit by a Moroccan foreign minister to Quito.

The North African country has secured Ecuador’s support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a serious and credible basis for resolving the Western Sahara dispute in December of last year, when the country suspended recognition of the self-styled SADR.

The decision is part of a momentum in favor of Morocco’s national cause. A growing list of countries have joined the chorus to support the country’s territorial integrity through direct recognition of its sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara, or through backing its Autonomy Plan as the only feasible path to end the regional dispute.

In addition to pledges to reinforce ties, Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabriela Sommerfeld also announced that her country would soon be opening an embassy in Rabat.

Bourita highlighted the news, noting that Morocco and Ecuador “opened a new chapter in their bilateral relations following President Noboa’s decision in October 2024 to suspend relations with the so-called SADR.”

He said that since Ecuador’s repeated support for Morocco, including their decision to no longer recognize the Polisario, the two countries have signed a roadmap to develop a South-South relationship as two geographically distant countries that are “very close on many issues.”

The Moroccan foreign affairs minister added that the two countries have developed their cooperation in many areas, including in the economic and agricultural sectors, as well as different partnerships benefiting citizens — notably pointing out an increasing number of study abroad scholarships granted.
